   What is Track to the Future?

           Since the end of the First World War America’s transit system has moved steadily away from rail--the most efficient, effective, and ecologically sound form of transport for people and goods out there.

                  It’s time we got back on track.

     That’s why SPUSA has launched, Track to the Future: A Campaign for Public Rail. As a first step, the campaign is working to support allies to return a big part of the national rail system to public ownership. In 2024, Rail Workers United (RWU) launched Public Rail Now, an effort to address the ongoing disaster created by private ownership of the nation’s freight rail network. The SPUSA is working in solidarity with RWU and others to advance the goals of the Public Rail Now campaign.

 But SPUSA’s Track to the Future goes further.

 Our campaign is a vision for transportation in America that sees mass public transit as the future–where cars and trucks are off the road, mobility for working people expands dramatically, and where technological innovation creates a fleet of trains that move faster, safer, and without the use of climate change-creating fossil fuels. We aim to bring a broader socialist vision to the interconnected issues of environment, labor, economy, and worker control as we pursue the creation of a truly publicly controlled national rail system.

A campaign kickoff meeting was held on Thursday October 17 for Party members from affiliated locals and at-large to discuss the goals of Track to the Future, outline next steps, and plan for future developments through the creation of a campaign committee.
